SEA CLOUD was built in 1931 as the private yacht of E. F. Hutton and Marjorie Merriweather Post, and at her launch she was the largest private yacht in the world. Post designed the interiors herself.

Her two owners' suites are still aboard and still booked: Carrara marble fireplace and bath, gold-plated swan fixtures, gilt ceilings. The rest of her cabins range from eight Deluxe Suites to classic staterooms.

In the Second World War she served the Coast Guard and Navy as a weather ship. She has carried passengers since 1979. FCV guests have sailed her through the Greek islands and on the Travels of Paul, and some have come back to her many times.

SEA CLOUD, year by year

  1. 1931

    Launched at Kiel as Hussar for E. F. Hutton and Marjorie Merriweather Post.

  2. 1935

    After Post's divorce and marriage to Ambassador Joseph E. Davies, renamed Sea Cloud.

  3. 1942

    Chartered to the Navy for a dollar a year; Coast Guard weather patrol, then USS Sea Cloud (IX-99).

  4. 1979

    Begins carrying passengers.

  5. 2019

    FCV charters her for a summer sailing, 27 July – 6 August.
